Scetis Desert, is one of the three early Christian monastic centers
and is best known today. It once had 50 monasteries, but nowadays there are
only 4 monasteries left. Al-Baramus Monastery (also Deir El
Baramous), which means the monastery of Romans, was famous for
two Roman priests, fled Christian persecution at this time, lived
there and built this monastery with a number of churches like of El-Adra
church (Church of Mary), Church of Anba Tadrous
and Church of Angel Michael. Anba Bishoy
Monastery (also St. Bishoi), named after Patron Saint Bishoi
and it has 5 churches. Abu Makar Monastery (St. Makarous) is
consisted of various churches that frequently destroyed and are being rebuilt. El-Surian
Monastery (also the Syrian Monastery) is dated to the 6th
century AD and women are not allowed into this monastery. It was built by the
orthodox monks and has many churches like Church of Sitt Mariam (Lady
Mary), also called "Cave Church" with relics of St.
John Kame.
