Abu Simbel, a village lying 230 kilometer south of Aswan in Nubia (300 kilometer by road), is the place where great temples stand. Abu Simbel Temples are located on the western bank of Lake Nasser and are known as the Nubian Monuments. The Great Temple at Abu Simbel was dedicated to Amun, Ra-Horakhty and Ptah gods, as well as Ramesses himself and it is the grandest most beautiful Egyptian temples. The Small Temple (also temple of Hathor and Nefertari) was dedicated to the goddess Hathor and Ramesses II’s chief consort, Nefertari.

The entire site was cut into large blocks (up to 30 tons, averaging 20 tons), dismantled, lifted and reassembled in a new location 65 meters higher and 200 meters back from the river between 1964 and 1968.
