Highlights     

St. Simeon was named by various archaeologists and travelers who arrived at the sight. Ancient sources called the site Anba Hatre (also Amba Samaan) after a consecrated bishop with a legend that Anba Hatre married at the age of 18. Immediately he decided to devote himself to chastity and become an ascetic after a touching funeral procession. He learned from Saint Baiman, St. Simeon underwent eight years of ascetic practices, retired to the desert, and applied all of his efforts into studying about Saint Antony. 

Ride a camel for around 15 minutes among the ruins to the southern tip of Elephantine Island where you will find St. Simeon's Monastery, an ancient, abandoned fortress monastery mostly built during the Seventh Century near Aswan.

Itinerary
